As listed this is the title page of a book entitled "memoirs of Robert Houdin ambassador, author, and conjurer". Written by himself. Edited by Dr. Shelton Mackenzie. - Geo. G. Evans, Publisher, no. 439 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia -- 1860.
Copywrite page lists G.G. Evans in 1859. Eastern District of Pa.
It is an octavo measuring 5 1/4 by 7 1/2. 445 numbered pages, plus 2 pages of other publications by G.G.Evans. Emboss texturing on cloth covers front and back, GGEcrest on front and back, gilt title on spine(either worn or dirty). Odd brownish olive drabish color. Corners bumped and worn. Top and bottom spine edge pulled and mostly gone. a minor bump or scuff here and there. elsewise I would call the covers in near very good condition. The end papers front and rear are plain brown, Front free end paper has mark where there used to be a label, probably store from which it was bought at one time. Second blank front ep has signature in pencil - E. Melchinger (something like that) probable owner at one time. This is apparently the second edition, as it apears the first is Sept. 26, 1859. No Illustrations. Index at rear. All pages crisp and intact. Interior I would consider to be in fine condition. As a total entity I consider this in VG to VG+ condition.
This is a fascinating account of his life, his magic, his statesmanship, his use of the new science of electromagnetism in diplomacy was fascinating on several levels.
I've had this book for probably 20 years, read it once, looked at it a couple of times, otherwise stored in bookshelf or box. Thought someone else should take over as keeper. So if you are a book collector and a magician you should ask me questions ( zchef4u2@yahoo.com )
