MEMOIRS OF ROBERT-HOUDIN
Ambassador, Author, and Conjurer, written by himself
Edited By Dr. R. Shelton MacKenzie
Copyright 1859 and published by George G. Evans in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This book was actually pirated from the Lascelles Wraxall translation with the exception of the introduction by MacKenzie, which notes errors in Robert-Houdin's story of von Kempelen's chess playing automation.
HardBound with dark brown cloth. 445pages and an Index in the back for easy referencing.
The content pages were so detailed, I've reproduced these for you above for ease in reading.
These content page photos were actually used for a different Houdin book, I was offering, which has sold previously. The content page photos, above, show water mark stains - the book offered here doesn't have any water stains. I decided to re-use the photo's, since they are intended for no other purpose than to show you, the buyer, what the content pages contain.
This is the book (well one like it) which Houdini's childhood friend, Jacob Hyman, gave then Ehrich Weiss to read. After doing so, the two changed Ehrich Weiss' name to Houdini. The two put together a vaudeville act and were known as The Brother's Houdini.
Book measures approx. 5 1/2"x7 1/2".
This book is actually in pretty good condition, considering it's from 149 Years Ago!!
Name hand written on the title page -and- judging from the ink and penmanship, it might have been the 1st owners.
A little soiling of the pages, to the upper boarder area, but thanks to wide top margins, no text, etc. are affected.
This is the first US Edition by George G. Evans.
The book has the "GGE" Evan crest on the covers.
The gilt lettering, on the spine, is faded. |

|
BINDING CONTRACT: By placing a bid on this item you are making a legally binding contract between you and the seller. Once you place a bid on this listing, it may not be retracted. In most states it is illegal to win an auction and not pay for it. In other words, if you don't want to pay for it, don't bid on it! |
 |
|
PROXY BIDDING FOR ALL BIDS: Please bid the maximum amount you are willing to pay for this item. Your maximum amount will be kept secret. Magic Castle Auctions will bid on your behalf as necessary by increasing your bid by the current bid increment up until your maximum is reached. This saves you the trouble of having to keep track of the auction as it proceeds and prevents you from being outbid at the last minute unless your spending limit has been exceeded. If you have bid on this item before your new bid must be greater than your previous bid. |
 |
DETAILS FOR THE SELLER AND THE WINNER:
The sellers contact information and the winners contact information will not be disclosed until the seller has paid any auction fees due.
The seller and the winner should contact each other within three business days to discuss the payment, shipping, and handling details.
The winner must pay the seller directly for the item and the seller must fulfill the winners order when payment terms are met.
Leave feedback for the other party once the seller has received the payment and the winner has received the merchandise.
If the seller is unable to establish contact with the winner within 3 business days of the end of the auction, she/he may lose the place as the winner and be at risk for receiving negative feedback and/or a Non-Paying Bidder Alert, both of which can ultimately lead to your accounts suspension and or termination with Magic Castle Auctions. (Note: Once negative feedback is left, it can not, and will not, be removed!)
